Yesterday I put the whole 2026 Cobalt book in three tables. Today is the club version of the real question people ask me: sterndrive, Surf, or Coastal / outboard?
Cobalt splits the current lineup into those three classes on cobaltboats.com/models — 10 sterndrive, 7 Surf, 7 outboard / Coastal. Same R / CS / A DNA in a lot of cases; the drive and the saltwater package are what actually change how you use the boat.
Sterndrive
This is classic Cobalt for lakes and most day-boat water. Engine under the sunpad, clean swim platform, familiar layout. Current book: R35, R35 Coupe, R33, R31, the new R26, R8, R4, CS23, CS22, and A29.
Factory class page: Sterndrive Class.
- Pick it if: you want the traditional Cobalt feel, a flush platform, and you mostly run freshwater or protected water.
- Tradeoffs: sterndrive maintenance lives under the hatch; saltwater needs more discipline than a Coastal outboard setup.
Surf
Same family boats with Surf Gate, Volvo Penta Forward Drive, and surf controls so you can throw a proper wave. Current book: R35 Surf, R33 Surf, R31 Surf, new R26 Surf, R8 Surf, R4 Surf, CS23 Surf.
Factory class page: Surf Class. Cobalt notes hard ballast tanks do not apply to R33 Surf and R35 Surf. Where they publish numbers: R26 Surf ~810 lb, R8 Surf ~2,350 lb, R4 Surf ~1,226 lb, CS23 Surf ~1,244 lb.
- Pick it if: wake surfing is part of the weekend, not a once-a-year stunt.
- Tradeoffs: you are buying the surf system and usually more weight / complexity than the plain sterndrive twin.
Coastal / Outboard
Marketed as Outboard Class / Coastal Edition — engines on the transom, saltwater package (stainless, sealed electrics, water management, coastal GPS, carpet-free storage, redundant bilge, self-bailing cockpit on Cobalt’s Coastal pitch). Current book: R35 Coastal, R35 Coastal Coupe, R33 Coastal, R31 Coastal, R8 Coastal, R6 Coastal, R4 Coastal.
Factory class page: Outboard Class. There is no R26 Coastal — the ~25′ outboard is still the R6 Coastal. Fuel tanks are often bigger than the sterndrive twins (R35 Coastal 250 gal vs R35 sterndrive 165 gal; R4 Coastal 70 gal vs R4 sterndrive 50 gal).
- Pick it if: you run salt, want outboard serviceability, or like the bigger range on several models.
- Tradeoffs: LOA numbers can look different with engines hanging off; swim-platform feel is not the same as a sterndrive.
