Cobalt’s A29

Cobalt A29

The A-series on MyCobalt still talks A25 and A28. The current factory book is one A boat: the A29. I am not going to pretend we posted this when it launched. We did not. It is not the August 2026 “just arrived” pair either. Those are the R26s. The A29 is the sterndrive that follows A25 / A28 on this site, 29′ 0″ long, 9′ 0″ wide, 121 gallons, Yacht Certified, head standard. That 9-foot beam is the first thing I noticed. Every R and CS boat I am writing up this week is 8′ 6″. The A29 is the wider one.

Factory line: “Spacious luxury for elevated days on the water.” Club translation: it is the day-cabin Cobalt in the current sterndrive class, sitting in length between the R8 (27′ 10″) and the R31 (31′ 5″). There is no A29 Surf. There is no A29 Coastal. If you wanted an A with a tower and ballast or an outboard on the transom, Cobalt did not print one.

Factory specs

  • LOA (w/ swim platform): 29′ 0″
  • Beam: 9′ 0″
  • Interior cockpit width: 94″
  • Deadrise at transom: 21 degrees
  • Fuel: 121 gal
  • Freshwater: 18 gal
  • Capacity: Yacht Certified
  • Head: yes (Porta Potti standard; electric porcelain optional)
  • Dry weight (varies with options): 7,275 lbs
  • Draft, drive up / down: 28″ / 38″
  • Engines: Volvo Penta 380–430 hp, MerCruiser 380–430 hp, Monsoon 430 hp

One hundred twenty-one gallons is a different day than the R8’s 80 or the R26’s 68. Eighteen gallons of freshwater is on the card too. This is the boat you take when the plan is lunch, a swim, and not racing home to a dockside restroom. The interior copy is built around a step-down day cabin with an enclosed head. In club terms: you can close a door. Standard is a Porta Potti; electric porcelain is on the options list. Dual Garmin 8610 glass cockpit is written as standard, which is already a bigger pair than the 743s on the smaller R boats. Helm seat is double-wide. I am not reprinting Splash & Stow, hydraulic platforms, and sun-awning SKUs. They are on the factory page if you care.

Power starts higher than the R4 / R26. Volvo and Merc packages on the spec list are 380 and 430. Monsoon is the 430 only. No 300-hp box. Dry weight 7,275 lbs. Draft 28″ up, 38″ down. Deadrise 21 degrees at the transom, which Cobalt actually printed here (they did not print deadrise on the R26 / R8 / R4 pages I pulled). Kevlar hull, composite floor and transom, automatic fire system. Still a Cobalt. If you came off an A25 or A28, this is the current letter. If you came off a 29-foot numeric boat, send me the hull number and a photo and we will figure out where it sits. I will not invent a replacement chart.

I have a soft spot for the A boats. They always felt like the Cobalts that wanted to stay out a little later. The 343 I knocked around Florida on was a bigger, different thing, but the instinct is the same: a real cabin, a real tank, less of the “we will just run back.” If you own an A29, I want to see how you actually use that day cabin. Factory video titles are not a substitute.

Anyone on an A29, send owner photos to editor@mycobalt.net. I live in the Seattle area and I will take a ride and write the feature. Selling the A25 / A28 it replaced? Advertise for $25 (or $50 premium). This is not a listing.
