Club inbox question I get every week: “What’s the best first Cobalt?” Honest answer — it depends how you boat. Here is the FAQ version, in plain club talk, pointed at the current book and our own classifieds.

1. What size should my first Cobalt be?
Most first-time Cobalt buyers land in the ~22–28′ band: trailerable 8′ 6″ beam, enough friends for a lake day, and (from the mid-20s up) a head.
- Easy trailer, no head required: CS22, CS23 / Surf, R4 family (~22–24′)
- Head + sweet-spot weekends: R26 / Surf (new for 2026), R8 family (~26–28′)
Jumping straight into ~31–35′ as a first Cobalt is fine if you already know big water and slip costs — just know it is a different lifestyle than a CS22 on a trailer.
2. New or used for a first Cobalt?
New if you want the current hull (R26 is the big 2026 story), warranty peace of mind, and a dealer who sets you up. Used if you want more boat per dollar and are willing to survey, sea trial, and check service records.

3. Sterndrive, Surf, or Coastal for a first boat?
- Sterndrive — the classic Cobalt day boat. Most used inventory and parts familiarity live here.
- Surf — if wake sports are the whole point. Same LOA family as the sterndrive twin in many cases; more gear and usually more money.
- Coastal / Outboard — salt water, shallow water, or you want outboard service simplicity. Bigger fuel tanks on several twins.
First Cobalt on a freshwater lake with no wakeboard habit? Start sterndrive. Salt marina or skinny water? Look Coastal. Everyone in the boat wants a wake? Surf.
4. Do I need a head on day one?
Not if you are truly day-tripping close to the ramp. Once kids, longer outings, or “we’re never going in before dinner” enter the picture, a head is the upgrade people wish they bought first. On the current book, heads start in the mid-20s (R26 / R6 Coastal / R8 and up).
5. What should I check before I buy used?
- Survey + compression / leak-down on the engine(s)
- Bellows, gimbal, and drive service history on sterndrives
- Trailer (if included) — brakes, bunks, lights, tires
- Soft goods and carpet — Cobalt interiors age better when covered and cleaned
- HIN / hull serial on the transom matching the title
If the seller will not allow a sea trial and survey, walk. There will be another Cobalt.
6. Where do club owners actually find first boats?
Dealer new inventory on cobaltboats.com, then used on MyCobalt’s Boats For Sale board and the usual local classifieds. I post owner ads here for $25 basic / $50 premium — that is how this club site stays alive.
7. What is a “safe” first model if I hate decision paralysis?
Club shorthand that still holds:
- Trailer + friends, keep it simple: CS22 or CS23
- Want the newest midsize with a head: R26
- Want every class option later: R8 family (sterndrive, Surf, and Coastal twins all exist)
